Y así espero que sea. El comienzo de una vuelta al cine. De esperar ansiosamente el estreno de una película. De ir al cine y encontrarlo lleno. Lleno, en la medida en que las nuevas medidas COVID lo permiten: una sala vacía, diríamos hace un par de años, pero llena en este 2021.

La verdad es que no esperaba encontrar una sala “tan llena”. Creíamos que íbamos a estar prácticamente solos como en las últimas ocasiones. Pero no. Allí estábamos: los amantes de Dune. 

No puedo ser muy objetiva dando mi opinión, porque admito cualquier manifestación de Dune. Sí puedo decir, que sigo quedándome con el Dune de David Lynch. Quizá sea por el impacto que me produjo, porque me sienta irremisiblemente atraída por ese mundo onírico y los complejos universos personales que nos ofrece este director, a pesar de la poca aceptación que tuvo en su momento. Yo, personalmente, la tengo grabada a fuego. No importa las veces que la vea, no importa que me sepa la escena de la caja de memoria: siempre me produce la misma emoción.  En esta ocasión, mi proceso habitual, primero la novela, después la película, se invirtió. Llegué a Frank Herbert y su Dune, después de que me llevara Lynch. No he leído toda la saga, pero aquellos que sí lo hayan hecho, y que estoy segura de que son la mayoría de los espectadores que llenan estos días las salas de cine, no pueden negar, aun sin ser directores, la difícil tarea, la titánica odisea, que debe ser llevarla a un guion, a una pantalla, y más cuando esta es la de un cine, no una serie televisiva que podría incorporar muchos capítulos y temporadas, algo que también se hizo y que tampoco tuvo un resultado muy loable. 

Leyendo algunas críticas profesionales de esta nueva visión, la de Denis Villeneuve, me sorprende la división tan marcada que se produce. Los que la elogian y la ensalzan sin mesura y aquellos que hablan de “aburrimiento”, “frustración”, “decepción”. Hablan de lentitud, de momentos en los que no pasa nada. Creo, sinceramente, y es solo mi opinión, que cuando vas a ver Dune, los espectadores pueden separarse en dos grupos, los neófitos y los incondicionales. Los neófitos depositan un voto de confianza. Los incondicionales ya hemos votado, aunque salgamos eligiendo o comparando, hemos disfrutado con Dune. Una vez más. 

La dificultad de llevar a la pantalla una obra como esta, en la que no solo hay imágenes impactantes, que las hay, velocidad en la acción, que existe solo cuando es necesaria y no de forma gratuita al estilo del Hollywood más comercial es, precisamente, la construcción psicológica que se consigue no solo al contar muchas cosas, sino que precisa de transformaciones o transfiguraciones internas que es lo más difícil de plasmar porque te obliga, en este caso concreto y en su traslado al cine, a contar mucho desde un punto de vista onírico. Onírico, porque con “la especia” se generan sueños y experiencias alucinógenas. Curiosamente, Denis Villenueve, se lo pone aún más difícil al no utilizar los monólogos internos que sí utilizó David Lynch basándose en la novela, y que sirven de apoyo a la narrativa. Denis Villeneuve hace algo diferente: fija la cámara y deposita la confianza en el actor para que exprese con sus ojos, con la expresión de su cara, ese pensamiento. El que ha leído el libro sabe lo que está pensando, y quien no lo ha leído, puede entender, si el actor es lo suficientemente bueno, la sutileza de lo que está ocurriendo. Los productores de Hollywood siempre han pensado que los espectadores éramos tontos, y en películas como Blade Runner, obligaron a Ridley Scott a poner la voz en off, lo que le daba también un punto más noir, más de cine negro, pero al mismo tiempo, aunque a mí me encantó también verla así, la finalidad inicial era esa: que la gente entendiera.

Denis Villeneuve, ha sido de alguna forma un osado. Su osadía no solo está en afrontar este reto, sino en hacerlo sabiendo que Dune no era un producto de masas, que no sigue los estándares del cine más comercial actual, tan reacio a hacernos pensar, a dejarnos respirar el silencio. Que los que se acerquen al mundo Dune por primera vez, lo deben hacer así, delante de la pantalla más grande que encuentren, dispuestos a disfrutar del gran trabajo que hay detrás de cada una de esas Dunas.

Posiblemente no pueda esperar a la segunda entrega y vuelva al cine a verla otra vez.
